MadMapping workshop at FREEMOTE 11

While this is not specific to Modul8, I wanted to get the word out on this upcoming MadMapping workshop at the FREEMOTE 11 Festival, Threshold edition in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Billed as “5 days of (inter)national co-creation, installations, performances, exhibitions, screenings, AV performances and more…”

This time fRED (who is part of the Berlin based FAIL collective of which I am party to) will be joining me to host the workshop.

Like the workshops I have held here in Berlin this one will consist of two days:

- Day 1: Presentation/Mapping exercises on boxes
- Day 2: Mapping of the environment where the workshop will be held

Here is the full information that will enable you to participate along with the dates and how to register:

Midi Thief Tutorial for TouchOSC+Modul8+CoreMIDI

OSC is still alive as a useful protocol for devices and applications to talk to each other, and especially so with TouchOSC. However, unlike your standard MIDI device it has always been somewhat intimidating. In Modul8 you use the OSC module and then you have to fiddle around with the network settings a bit to get things working. Not nearly as easy as plugging in your MIDI device, enabling MIDI mapping and jiggling a slider or knob.

It is nearly that easy now because TouchOSC recently added MIDI. You might call this a downgrade (or a side grade? and whatever happened to HD MIDI anyway?) but it does not hurt to just add a good old protocol when it can be done through some extra, tried and true lines of code? And made even more helpful with the implementation of CoreMIDI in iOS.

At the top of this post the MIDI Thief provides a basic tutorial for connecting your iPad, iPhone or iPodTouch to Modul8 with the CoreMIDI providing you with feedback.

For those of you who are connected to our Facebook page, may have seen the post by VJ Lupin who is working on a very special layout.

It uses specially modified versions of the BPM module and the OSC module to provide more feedback options such as clip playback position and BPM speed data. Be forewarned that this is not yet available publicly, but the tutorial above will get you going with the basics.

Personally, I have not really taken to using the iPad for performance. I still prefer a physical knob and slider. Where I have found the iPad useful has been when I need a really specific setup AND I need to be away from the computer. One example is doing presentations for Modul8 when I don’t want to be standing near the computer. Most recent was when I created an installation and needed to move around the space taking video of the installation from various angles. It came in handy to really quickly create a basic control for resetting the video without having to go all the way back to the computer.

For the full information on the requirements for what you need in to make this tutorial work for you check out the page of the video.

Talk at ITP

m8talkitp
My good friend and colleague Chika Iijima (aka Visualicious) has arranged for me to do a talk at ITP in NYU where she is currently studying. For those unaware of ITP, it is school within NYU where people study the design, development and application of technology based interactivity.

This will be less tech, and more about the ideas behind the creation of Modul8 and The Mapping Festival. I will also talk about where we are now with these projects and the vision we have for its future(s), followed by some Q & A. The talk is free and open to the general public.

I will also be attending some of the events scheduled for the upcoming vimeo festival unfolding between October 8th through the 9th.

I am looking forward to being back in New York, re-absorbing its energy a bit, friends, family as well as meeting new people. If you are in attendance to any of the above mentioned and know what I look like feel free to say hi.

———-> Please note – Ilan Katin was previously scheduled for 3:30pm in Room 50. He will now speak at 4:30pm in room 20 in order to avoid conflict between these 2 events. Sorry for any inconvenience. <——————

Modul8 mini tour in Brazil

Modul8/Brazil mini tour

The Modul8 Team has been invited to Brazil by Pedro Zaz to do some VJing Video Ataq in Rio de Janeiro, do a workshop at VJ Tourna in São Paulo along with presiding as judges for the tournament itself.

We have heard a lot about how much VJs in Brazil love Modul8. It will be nice to witness this enthusiasm first hand, meet people and see how they are using the software as well as provide insights into how we use it. We will be bringing several controllers that we like along with some DMX hardware.

For precise dates have a look at our events page.

Beyond the dates on the events page we will be in São Paulo until the 25th, so feel free to contact us if you are not able to make it to any of the events listed.
