For a while, one of the most frequently requested features for Modul8 was a timeline. As one who has been spending the last seven(!) years keeping an eye on every incoming message, these things can often start echoing in your head to the point where it becomes a monster awaiting to devour you whole. And then one day the requests subsided with occasional bursts. The reality is that Modul8 was very much designed for live performance. I recently partook in a short discussion on Facebook about the necessity of auto beat matching or an ‘undo’ command in software that is meant to be performed like an instrument. My retort was ‘is there an undo function on a violin’?
My ramblings aside, I was really excited when VEZÉR was announced. There are few other open and free options available, but as with all things open and free they come with their own eccentricities, these being either stability issues or (here’s an oxymoron) simply too complex to be usable in what I would refer to as a production environment where ease of use is key to getting the job done.
Having had access to VEZÉR for testing and feedback, I can safely say that it gets the job done. You have a choice between using MIDI or OSC, both for triggering timelines, and most importantly for controlling everything in Modul8. For MIDI there is a simple triggering function so you can easily map a track within a timeline, something you would do if you were mapping a slider or a knob in Modul8. For framerate fanatics who prefer OSC, there are Modul8 keyword presets. Simply enable the OSC module in Modul8 and customize the number if you are looking to control a layer, and you can move layers around as you would in any other keyframe oriented animation program. If you need a custom keyword it is peanuts to open up the keywords browser in Modul8 and find the corresponding keyword for what you want to control.
At some point in the near future I will publish a video or two that demonstrates the use of VEZÉR with Modul8 in ways specific to Modul8. But for those who can’t wait and are adventurous I can assure you that jumping into timeline editing and key framing with VEZÉR is a piece of cake I am sure you will quickly become addicted to.
